Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters 4OZ is a small-batch aromatic bitters produced in Bavaria, Germany, by Bitter Truth GmbH using extra-slow maceration of all-natural roots, seeds, barks, fruits, and herbs. Bottled at 39% ABV (78 proof), this 4-ounce bottle delivers a rich, gingerbread-scented profile built on cinnamon, cardamom, anise, and cloves. The extended maceration time draws out layered complexity that separates it from mass-produced aromatic bitters, making it a bartender favorite for elevating classic cocktail recipes.

Tasting Notes:

Aroma: Warm gingerbread spice leads into distinct cinnamon bark, followed by cardamom pods and a whisper of anise. The nose is inviting and layered, revealing dried berry nuances beneath the dominant baking-spice character.

Taste: The entry is bitter and tangy, immediately asserting the aromatic backbone. Mid-palate, cinnamon shines with clarity while clove and cardamom build complexity. At its peak, dried berry notes provide a fruity lift that keeps the profile from becoming one-dimensional.

Finish: Long and textured, with a cocoa-infused trail that lingers well after each dash. The bittersweet conclusion carries fading echoes of warm spice and dark fruit.

How to Drink Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters:

A few dashes transform any spirit-forward cocktail. Use it in an Old Fashioned, where its cinnamon clarity and cocoa finish complement bourbon or rye whiskey beautifully. It excels in a Manhattan, adding gingerbread warmth that rounds out sweet vermouth. Try it in a Champagne Cocktail—a sugar cube soaked with these bitters and topped with sparkling wine showcases its fruity, spiced aromatics without heaviness.

Best For:

  • Home cocktail enthusiasts building a premium bitters collection
  • Upgrading classic whiskey cocktails like the Old Fashioned or Manhattan
  • Gifting to the amateur or professional bartender in your life
  • Exploring craft bitters beyond mainstream options

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters taste like? It is bitter and tangy with prominent cinnamon, cardamom, anise, and clove flavors, finishing with a long cocoa-infused trail. Dried berry notes add a fruity dimension that keeps the profile versatile and refreshing.

How does Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters compare to Angostura Aromatic Bitters? Berg & Hauck's is generally considered a sweeter, more approachable take on the aromatic bitters style that Angostura defined—Drinkhacker described it as exactly that, awarding it an A- rating. The extra-slow maceration and all-natural ingredient sourcing give it a more layered spice character and a longer, cocoa-tinged finish than Angostura's sharper, more medicinal bite.

Is Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters good for cocktails? Absolutely—it was designed specifically as a bartender-grade cocktail ingredient. Its balanced bitterness and complex spice profile make it a drop-in upgrade anywhere you would normally reach for standard aromatic bitters.

Where is Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters made? It is produced by Bitter Truth GmbH in Pullach, Bavaria, Germany. The bitters are made by macerating 100% natural roots, seeds, barks, fruits, herbs, and plants in an alcohol base using an extended slow-maceration process.

What foods pair well with Berg & Hauck's Old Time Aromatic Bitters? Try a few dashes in sauces for braised short ribs, drizzle over vanilla ice cream, add to dark chocolate truffles, stir into apple cider for a spiced fall drink, or incorporate into a glaze for roasted pork loin.

Why Buy Berg & Hauck's?

Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck founded The Bitter Truth to revive forgotten bitters styles using historically informed recipes and superior sourcing from around the world. Their Old Time Aromatic Bitters earned an A- from Drinkhacker, which praised its approachable sweetness and aromatic depth. Every ingredient is 100% natural, and the extra-slow maceration process ensures a complexity that shortcuts cannot replicate. At 78 proof, the alcohol base carries flavors efficiently into cocktails, meaning a little goes a long way from this 4-ounce bottle.

Nice AVR
Style: AVR-X1800H
Refurbished and looking like brand new. One small scratch on the side. It went in a cabinet and it's hidden. All paperwork seemed to be there. If I didn't know it looks like factory sealed . I've got an older Denon. Just wanted to move up to 7.2. Audyssey recognize a second sub. But neither did my older on. No problem with that though. Just FYI. After the original setup and minor tweaking it sounds fantastic for me. I haven't had it but a few days and I hope I get many years of enjoyment from this

Very good audio receiver for my tower speakers and record player set up
Style: Stereo Receiver, Configuration: Receiver
I have had my 1980s Roger sound lab CG 82 Tower speakers connected to a 1999 Technics audio receiver. I use this set up for Radio and my record player. After many good years, the low end on my audio receiver gave out. I have had it serviced before, but I have owned it for five years and it is a 27-year-old piece of gear that has seen better days. ChatGPT led me to this receiver. It took me less than five minutes to connect my speakers. What I love about this receiver is that it’s so simple to use. The radio signal is very good right out the box without an additional antenna. I was resistant to buying a Bluetooth receiver, but it connected to my iPad and my iPhone in seconds. Now I can play backing tracks through my Roger sound lab speaker speakers while I jam out on guitar. No issues with sound quality or anything like that. Runs cool and quiet. If you are a total audio file, you could buy something more expensive. I am a musician and I listen to vinyl. Mostly jazz and classical, and this is fine for my needs. For most people running a record player, looking to modernize with a Bluetooth enabled receiver, this will suit your needs.
