Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Catnip brings soft texture, aromatic foliage, and a relaxed cottage-garden feel to sunny planting areas while also offering practical value as a useful herb. Its loose upright habit and long season of bloom make it easy to work into herb gardens, pollinator beds, and informal borders where natural movement and fragrance are part of the appeal. This perennial is especially useful for gardeners who want a low-maintenance plant that can support pollinators while also serving as a favorite for cats and an easy herb for home gardens. It creates a casual focal point with a softer look than many more formal edging or bedding plants.

Distinctive Features

Catnip is prized for its strongly aromatic gray-green to grayish-green foliage and its spikes of small white flowers often marked with pale violet or lavender spotting. Unlike many ornamental catmints, it has a looser, more open habit that gives it a natural and slightly wild character in the garden. Bloom typically begins in late spring or early summer and can continue into late summer or early fall, especially if plants are sheared after the first flush. Mature plants commonly reach about 2 to 3 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, forming a bushy, upright clump that may self-seed if flowers are left in place.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Plant in full sun to part shade, with full sun preferred in cooler climates and some afternoon shade helpful in hotter, more humid regions.
  • Soil: Grow in well-drained soil, as catnip tolerates poor to average soils but performs best where drainage is reliable.
  • Water: Provide regular water during establishment, then water as needed, since established plants are fairly drought tolerant.
  • Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 7, with some references extending performance into Zone 9 in favorable conditions.
  • Habit: This is an upright, bushy, herbaceous perennial with a loose clumping habit.
  • Bloom and Foliage: White flowers with pale violet spotting bloom from late spring or summer into early fall above aromatic gray-green foliage.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in herb gardens or informal sunny beds where its aromatic foliage and relaxed habit can anchor the planting naturally.
  • Herb Gardens: Include in herb gardens where it adds fragrance, seasonal bloom, and practical value for drying or fresh use.
  • Pollinator Plantings: Plant in pollinator-friendly beds where the flowers can help attract bees and other beneficial insects.
  • Containers: Grow in containers when a more controlled planting is preferred, especially in areas where self-seeding could become an issue.
  • Informal Borders: Blend into cottage-style and naturalistic plantings where its softer habit fits comfortably with other herbs and perennials.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Shear plants back after the first bloom flush to encourage fresh growth and additional flowering.
  • Watering Routine: Avoid overwatering once established, since catnip performs better in drier conditions than in consistently wet soil.
  • Cleanup: Cut plants back in late season or early spring to refresh growth and keep the clump tidy.
  • Spread Control: Remove spent flowers before seed set if you want to limit self-seeding in the garden.
  • Deer Resistance: This plant is often considered deer resistant because of its aromatic foliage, though browsing can still occur under pressure.

Why Choose Catnip?

  • Aromatic Foliage: The fragrant leaves add sensory appeal and practical herb-garden value throughout the season.
  • Pollinator Appeal: Its flowers help bring bees and other beneficial insects into sunny garden spaces.
  • Easy Care: Once established, it handles dry conditions well and asks for very little routine maintenance.
  • Multi-Purpose Use: It works as an herb, a pollinator plant, and a casual ornamental in one planting.
  • Cat-Friendly Interest: It offers the familiar cat-attracting qualities that make it a popular and memorable garden addition.

Catnip is a dependable choice for gardeners who want fragrance, soft texture, and easy seasonal performance in sunny spaces. Whether planted in herb beds, containers, or informal borders, it brings practical value, pollinator support, and a relaxed focal point that feels right at home in naturalistic garden designs.

Size down. Thin soles are cold.
Size: Small, Color: Light Grey Ragg Wool
The ragg wool is warm and they seem well made. The foot sizing is very long. I'm a 7.5 to 8 always. The choice was 6-7 or 8-9. The 8-9 is more than 2 inches too long. I'm afraid they will cause a fall. Also know that the cushioning is not as pictured. It is only half the depth of the leather sides. When you stand on anything but carpets, you feel the cold floor. This is all due to the gravity on earth.

Best slippers, beware Sizes may be off.
Size: Medium, Color: Charcoal Ragg Wool
I LOVE these sock moccasins shoes or whatever they are. I purchased 2 pair in different colors and the upper sock material was a significantly different material in its weave density and stretchyness. (blue more thin and stretchy than grey). I wear blue ones indoors, and the grey ones stay in the car for long car trips. Sizing: both pair I bought say 7-9mens 9-10women -- In how they actually fit they are 9-10 mens. The soles are leather with a thin bit of soft foam, in winter I can walk around in snow in them and the cold doesnt get through. Not that you should walk in snow with them since the leather is like a suede so it gets gross. You can put them through the washing machine and it makes them look good as new.

Is this a joke slipper?
Size: Large, Color: Charcoal Ragg Wool
Bought size large (men’s 9-10) this past year for my husband for Christmas. These are not made to fit a human being unless it is a severely skinny person with very very long feet. The feet are too big for him but the ankles are so narrow he can’t put them on, and my husband is actually very lean, he teaches martial arts for a living 6 days a week. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a person in my entire life who simultaneously has long enough feet combined with skinny enough legs to fit these slippers. For a laugh we got our skinniest female friend to try them on and she could just barely squeeze her legs into them. I think she described it as “squeezing her skin off of her legs” or something like that, and then of course the feet were comically huge for her because she is so petite. We never got around to returning them and I just found them last night and remembered the whole incident. I tried to fit my forearm inside them but could not fit much past the wrist because they were too tight and I had a good laugh. I think I might cut them up and use the pieces to patch his old slippers that actually fit. To be fair we actually got a lot of laughs out of the product so it wasn’t a total waste. Buy them as a joke or save your money.

Great slippers.
Size: 14-15 Women/12-13 Men, Color: Light Grey Ragg Wool
They're great slippers. Literally my whole family, nuclear and extended, wears them. This is the 3rd pair I've bought. I usually wear a size 12, but these are a little big. Ill be washing them in hot water and drying them in...well...the dryer to see if they shrink. I can't recommend these slippers enough.
