Gynura aurantiaca ‘Purple Passion’ variegated is a trailing evergreen cultivar distinguished by its cream-marbled foliage, covered in fine purple hairs that give it a velvety appearance and purple sheen. Like the standard form, it begins with upright growth but soon sprawls or cascades as stems elongate, making it well-suited to hanging containers. The variegated version retains the vivid contrast of purple fuzz against variegated leaves, especially under good lighting. It produces small, orange-yellow composite flowers late in its lifecycle, which often emit a strong, unpleasant odour.
It roots easily from stem cuttings, enabling continual propagation and regeneration. Regular pruning promotes bushy growth and maintains an attractive form, while also extending its ornamental lifespan.
Native to:
Tropical regions of Southeast Asia, particularly Java, Indonesia. The variegated cultivar is a horticultural selection not found in the wild.
Water:
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly, ensuring that excess water drains freely. Avoid waterlogging. In winter, reduce watering frequency as growth slows.
Light:
Provide bright, indirect light. Sufficient light helps maintain both the purple colouring and the cream variegation. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Low light may cause fading and legginess.
Humidity:
Thrives in moderate humidity levels (50–70%). Do not mist, as the fine hairs on the leaves trap moisture and can lead to rot. Use a pebble tray or humidifier if ambient air is dry.
Temperature:
Maintain temperatures between 18 °C and 27 °C. Keep away from cold drafts and avoid letting temperatures fall below 15 °C, which can cause stress or stalling.
