Anthurium Magnificum
A large Colombian cloud forest species native to the humid montane forests of the Chocó and neighboring departments at elevations from roughly 300 to 1,500 meters, where it grows as a terrestrial to hemiepiphytic plant in the perpetually moist, shaded understory. One of the most widely used parent species in collector anthurium hybridization — its combination of large leaf scale, quadrangular four-winged petioles, and bold venation passes consistently into its offspring, making it both a rewarding specimen plant and a foundational lineage in the collector velvet anthurium hybrid world. New leaves emerge in warm copper to reddish-bronze tones before maturing to deep, rich, dark green velvet.
-
Light: Bright but soft indirect light supports the largest leaf development — the dark velvet surface is sensitive to direct sun exposure which bleaches and dulls the characteristic coloration.
-
Soil: Very open, chunky epiphytic mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir with excellent drainage and aeration; waterlogging is the primary cultivation failure.
-
Temperature/Humidity: Warm temperatures between 65-80°F; high humidity of 70-80% is essential for maintaining the velvet texture and supporting clean leaf emergence.
-
Watering: Keep consistently but lightly moist — allow the top inch to approach dryness between waterings. Never waterlog; never allow to dry out fully.
-
Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer supplemented with calcium and magnesium every 4-6 weeks during active growth; dilute to half strength. Reduce in winter.
