Philodendron gloriosum

Philodendron gloriosum is a Colombian crawling Philodendron grown for large heart-shaped leaves with a velvety surface and pale venation. Its surface-running stem moves sideways across the substrate and produces one new leaf at a time from the active growing tip. A wide, shallow pot gives the stem room to advance while the root zone stays airy and evenly drained.

The creeping stem has visible internodes and persistent cataphylls, and it belongs at the substrate surface. Roots grow down into the mix while the active tip continues forward across the pot.

Philodendron gloriosum velvet leaves and crawling growth

  • Leaf shape: Broad, heart-shaped blades become larger as the creeping stem establishes.
  • Texture: The velvety surface gives mature leaves a deep green, matte finish.
  • Venation: Pale veins define the blade shape and become more pronounced as leaves harden.
  • Growth habit: A surface-creeping stem needs horizontal pot space and an airy substrate surface.
  • Family: Araceae.

How Philodendron gloriosum creeps across the pot

Philodendron gloriosum develops one leaf at a time from a crawling stem. The stem should stay visible on top of the substrate, with roots growing down into an airy aroid mix. Deep planting keeps moisture around the stem and increases the risk of rot.

As the stem advances, the plant builds a low, spreading shape with new leaves emerging from the active tip. A pot with open substrate ahead of the growing point supports cleaner growth, especially once the stem begins reaching the pot edge.

Care for Philodendron gloriosum crawling stems

  • Pot shape: Choose a wider pot so the creeping stem has room to move forward.
  • Stem position: Keep the surface-running stem visible and clear of wet, compacted mix.
  • Watering: Water when the upper 25–35% of the pot has dried, then let the surface settle before watering again.
  • Substrate: Use an airy aroid mix that holds light moisture while draining quickly around the roots.
  • Light: Provide bright indirect light to support broad leaves and steady growth.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves open with fewer tears or stuck edges.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm, ideally around 18–27°C, and protect it from cold draughts.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser diluted below full strength.
  • Repotting: Repot when the growing stem reaches the pot edge or root growth has filled the container.
  • Propagation: Stem sections with at least one node can root in a warm, humid setup.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves at the base of the petiole and keep old, wet cataphyll material from collecting around the stem.
  • Mineral substrates: It can adapt to airy semi-hydro or mineral substrates if the creeping stem stays above the wet zone.

Philodendron gloriosum stem and leaf issues

  • Soft creeping stem: Check planting depth and moisture; the stem should sit on top of the mix.
  • Yellow leaves: Often linked to heavy substrate or overwatering around the roots.
  • Torn new leaves: Improve humidity and keep watering steadier while leaves are expanding.
  • Stalled growth: Check whether the growing tip has run out of horizontal space.
  • Pests: Check the undersides of leaves and the petiole bases for thrips, spider mites and mealybugs.
  • Leaf spotting: Improve airflow around the plant and keep the velvety leaf surface dry after watering.

Pet safety for Philodendron gloriosum

Philodendron gloriosum is toxic if eaten and can irritate the mouth and digestive tract. Place it away from pets and wash your hands after handling cut or damaged tissue.

Philodendron gloriosum published name and etymology

The genus name Philodendron comes from Greek roots meaning tree-loving, a reference to climbing and tree-associated growth in much of the genus. Philodendron gloriosum was described by Édouard André and published in Illustration Horticole in 1876. The species epithet gloriosum means glorious or splendid, matching the broad velvety leaves and pale venation seen on mature plants.

Philodendron gloriosum brings a low, spreading growth habit together with large velvet leaves and bold pale veins.

CHOKING HAZARD
Flavor Name: Bone (S), Size: 6 Count (Pack of 1)
CHOKING HAZARD: I purchased these bones for my small Yorki.. He ate the first two without incident; however, on the third bone he unfortunately choked. As the bones wear down, they become extremely stringy, and those strands do not appear to be digestible. I had to rush my dog to the emergency room, which cost $700. Three days later, he became even sicker because he was unable to pass the remaining portion of the bone still in his stomach. I then had to take him to his regular veterinarian, where he was admitted overnight and diagnosed with pancreatitis and a severely irritated gastrointestinal tract. This entire ordeal cost me over $1,500 in addition to the initial $700 emergency visit. I am grateful that my dog is now alive and well, but these bones pose a serious choking hazard and do not digest properly. I strongly caution other pet owners, especially those with small dogs.

One of the cleanest, most reliable creatine options out there
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 30 Servings (Pack of 1)
I’ve tried quite a few creatine brands over the years, and the Thorne Creatine – Micronized Creatine Monohydrate Powder is easily one of the highest-quality options I’ve used. What stands out immediately is how clean and simple the formula is—just pure micronized creatine monohydrate with no fillers or additives. Each serving gives you the standard 5g dose, and it’s NSF Certified for Sport, which adds an extra layer of confidence around quality and purity. Mixability is excellent. Because it’s micronized, it dissolves much better than a lot of other creatine powders I’ve tried—no clumping or gritty texture, even in just water. Performance-wise, it does exactly what you want from a creatine: improved strength, better endurance during workouts, and faster recovery between sessions. Creatine monohydrate is also the most well-researched and proven form for performance and muscle gains, which is why I stick with it. Another big plus is that it’s completely unflavored, so it’s easy to mix into anything—protein shakes, pre-workout, or just water—without affecting taste. Overall, this is a no-frills, high-quality creatine that delivers exactly what you expect. If you’re looking for a clean, trusted supplement that just works, this is an easy recommendation.

Great Creatine Monohydrate That Doesn’t Give Me Cramps
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 90 Servings (Pack of 1)
I switched over to creatine hcl, a more expensive and less studied version of creatine, after creatine monohydrate gave me terrible cramps. Then I tried this brand, and it is amazing: first creatine monohydrate that doesn’t give me cramps! Mixes well in my juice, and no residual taste. Also comes with a great quality blue scoop. Extremely high quality creatine.

Cellular energy boosters that protect the brain.
Flavor Name: Unflavored, Size: 90 Servings (Pack of 1)
Creatine monohydrate, a cellular energy enhancer that acts like armor protecting the brain, has been the subject of a groundbreaking study at the University of Sydney that has stunned the medical community. Vegetarians who added five grams of creatine to their daily diet each morning saw an average increase of fifteen points on IQ tests and a 40% improvement in working memory after just six weeks. This isn't just for fitness; it's about energizing brain cells. Creatine isn't just for muscles—a fact 99% of people don't understand. While the brain only accounts for 2% of total body weight, it consumes 20% of the body's energy. Creatine is essentially the fast energy currency needed for neurons to think and form memories. When you add creatine to your coffee, researchers at the University of Chichester discovered a remarkable phenomenon: caffeine, by increasing blood flow to the brain, increased the brain's absorption of creatine by 28%. Simultaneously, creatine completely eliminated the energy crash typically associated with caffeine by maintaining adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels within neurons. A ten-year follow-up study of 6,000 adults over 60 found that those who consumed five grams of creatine daily experienced a 70% reduction in cognitive decline. MRI scans showed a 50% reduction in brain atrophy, and their reaction times remained at a level 20 years younger than their actual age. These scientific conclusions are astonishing. Creatine acts as a cellular buffering system, instantly replenishing ATP. More importantly, it protects brain cells from excitotoxicity, a process where neurons become exhausted due to overstimulation. Research published in the Journal of Neuroscience shows that creatine supplementation increases brain creatine levels by 39%, which is directly correlated with improved problem-solving abilities and emotional resilience. There's another amazing aspect that's rarely mentioned: research from the University of Utah found that creatine coffee reduced depressive symptoms by up to 52% in treatment-resistant cases because it energizes the mitochondria in brain cells that are often underperforming. Studies also show that people with higher brain creatine levels experience 60% less damage from traumatic brain injuries and recover faster. It's like a cellular airbag for neurons. The correct way to use creatine is to choose creatine monohydrate, which has been validated by over 6,000 studies. Because it doesn't dissolve easily in cold water, you need to stir it thoroughly into hot coffee. Add five grams, about one teaspoon, to your coffee every morning. Adding a little milk or cream is recommended, as the fat helps with absorption and can mask the grainy texture that some people dislike. Consistency is key when taking creatine; since it works through saturation, you need to take it daily for about four weeks to fully saturate your muscle and brain tissue, after which you can maintain the dosage daily. Unlike supplements that provide immediate effects, creatine is cumulative; most people experience improved endurance after seven to ten days, while the full cognitive benefits appear after three to four weeks. Some people use a loading phase of twenty grams per day in divided doses during the first week to achieve saturation faster, but studies show this is not necessary and may cause temporary water retention. Quality is also important; it's recommended to look for brands that have been tested for purity to avoid stomach upset or headaches due to impurities. One thing to note about creatine in coffee is that because water is drawn into the muscle cells, you may gain two to four pounds in the first two weeks, but this is not fat, but rather improved cellular hydration. Multiple studies spanning up to twenty-one years have confirmed the safety of creatine, even showing improvements in kidney function indicators.
