Marumi Kumquat Tree For Sale
Available in both 1 gallon and 3 gallon sizes.
Marumi kumquat or Round kumquat is one of the recognized species of kumquat (Fortunella japonica) and originated in Japan, hence the specific name. Superficially it resembles Nagami kumquat, except being smaller in all aspects and with round fruit rather than oblong fruit. Leaves are lanceolate and dark green, about 1-2 inches long. The plant tends to hold leaves upright at sharp angles to the stem. Tree size is about the same as for Nagami, and Marumi will best be used in the landscape as a large shrub rather than as a tree. If growing as a commercial crop, Marumi could be planted much closer together than would be advisable for standard citrus.
Fruit are about one inch in diameter and round, with a thin, sweet rind and abundant, sour juice inside. Marumi is sweeter than Nagami, and the light orange fruit resemble miniature sweet oranges on the tree, but the fruit lack the intense deep orange coloration of Nagami. Because of this, Nagami has become the preferred ornamental kumquat. For this reason, and because the fruit are not as sweet as Meiwa kumquat, Marumi often gets ignored, and can be difficult to find in a nursery. However, what it may lack in color or taste is more than compensated in terms of cold-hardiness.
Even as a small plant, Marumi is extraordinarily cold-hardy, enduring low teens F with just defoliation, and rebounding in the spring with foliage and fruit. It should be an essential plant for any cold-hardy citrus collection.
