Tillandsia ionantha 'Fuego' is a cult favorite in the air plant world, appropriately named "Fuego" (Fire) for its ability to blush a stunning, fiery red. This isn't just a single plant; you are receiving a Clump—a mature colony where multiple individual plants have grown together to form a spectacular living orb.
Native to Central America, 'Fuego' is a smaller, more compact cultivar of Ionantha. When it enters its bloom cycle, the entire clump turns brilliant crimson, producing tubular purple flowers with yellow stamens. This clumping specimen is perfect for hanging displays or as a high-impact centerpiece on a piece of driftwood.
Light
▾Prefers very bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon rays. Bright light is essential to trigger the red blushing; in lower light, the plant will remain green.
Watering & Hydration
▾Soak the entire clump in room-temperature water for 20-30 minutes once a week. Mist daily in dry environments. **Vital:** Because clumps are dense, you must shake them well after soaking and ensure they dry completely within 4 hours to prevent rot in the center of the colony.
Growing Surface
▾**No soil required.** These are epiphytes that live on air. You can nestle the clump in a glass terrarium, place it on a geometric wire stand, or mount it to bark using waterproof glue or fishing line. Ensure the base is never sitting in constant moisture.
Feeding & Fertilization
▾Use a specialized Tillandsia/Bromeliad fertilizer at half-strength once a month. You can add this to your soaking water or spray it directly onto the leaves. Avoid copper-based fertilizers as they are toxic to air plants.
Propagation & Clumping
▾Ionantha 'Fuego' is a prolific clumper. After flowering, each mother plant produces several "pups" (offsets) from the base. We recommend leaving the pups attached to this clump to allow the colony to grow larger and more impressive over time.
Soft/Brown Base in Center
▾This is heart rot from trapped water. In clumps, it's easy for water to get stuck between individual plants. Always dry upside down with good airflow after watering.
Dried, Brittle Leaf Tips
▾A sign of low humidity or underwatering. Increase misting frequency and ensure your weekly soak is thorough.
