Philodendron Maximum
The name says everything — Philodendron maximum is the largest philodendron species, producing some of the most dramatically scaled foliage of any plant that can realistically be kept indoors. Native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, it grows as a hemiepiphyte, climbing host trees to impressive heights while producing leaf blades that can reach 3-6 feet in length and nearly as wide at maturity, in a deep, semi-glossy green with a leathery texture and wavy, undulating margins that give each leaf an almost sculptural presence. In indoor conditions leaves are more modest but still routinely reach 2-3 feet, and the progression from smaller juvenile leaves to increasingly enormous mature leaves as the plant climbs is one of the most satisfying spectacles in aroid cultivation. A serious greenhouse or high-ceiling statement plant for collectors who want genuine, unapologetic scale — not a plant for small spaces, but an extraordinary one for growers who can accommodate it.
As a climbing hemiepiphyte, this species produces dramatically larger leaves on vertical support — a tall, robust moss pole or trellis is essential for realizing the plant's full leaf potential. Provide bright indirect light; good light is the single most important factor in producing the characteristically enormous mature leaves, while insufficient light results in smaller, paler foliage and leggy growth. Water when the top inch of medium is dry, keeping the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, in a rich, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. High humidity of 70-85% supports the healthiest, most vigorous leaf development. Maintain warm temperatures between 65-85°F away from cold drafts. Toxic to humans and pets if ingested.
