The Pelargonium crassicaule is a rare and eye-catching succulent geranium that's perfect for collectors and those seeking something truly unique for indoor pots or drought-tolerant gardens. With its compact, sculptural form and curious caudex (swollen base), it’s often grown as a bonsai-style plant indoors, though it can also thrive in rock gardens or arid outdoor landscapes in warm climates.

Native to the dry, mountainous regions of South Africa, Pelargonium crassicaule has adapted to extreme conditions by storing water in its thickened stem and roots.

The name “crassicaule” literally means "thick stem," referring to its swollen, tuberous base.

Pelargonium crassicaule is a small, shrubby succulent that typically grows up to 12 inches tall.

Its most striking feature is the fleshy, caudex-like base, which can be partly exposed to visual effects.

From this base arise short, thick branches topped with delicate, gray-green leaves that are often lobed or fringed.

During the growing season, this plant produces charming small flowers, usually in white or pale pink, with distinctive dark markings that give it a wild, natural look.

The flowers are borne in loose clusters and can appear multiple times a year under the right conditions.

When it comes to Pelargonium care, the Watering needs are minimal, this plant thrives on a classic "soak and dry" routine. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings and cut back significantly during winter dormancy. Like many other succulent Pelargoniums, Pelargonium crassicaule prefers well-drained succulent  soil, opens in a new tab

Indoors, provide bright, indirect sunlight, or place it near a sunny south- or west-facing window for a few hours of direct sun.

It enjoys temperatures between 65–80°F, and should be protected from drafts and cold windows in winter.

Outdoors, Pelargonium crassicaule grows best in USDA zones 10–11.

It should be brought indoors if temperatures drop below 40°F, as it is not frost-tolerant.

In summer, it can thrive on a sunny patio or in a protected rock garden with excellent drainage. People often confuse Pelargonium crassicaule with Pelargonium mirabile because both have similar small, thick leaves and a compact, shrubby growth habit. Their delicate, pale flowers and slow-growing nature make them even harder to tell apart at a glance.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Pelargonium succulent is a collector’s gem, combining sculptural form, drought tolerance, and delicate floral beauty. Whether grown indoors in a bright spot or outdoors in a sunny rock garden, this plant thrives with little attention. Its rare character and low-maintenance nature make it a must-have for succulent enthusiasts, especially those who appreciate plants with personality and structure.

Beautiful high quality book
Format: Hardcover
This book is just what I wanted. It is very high quality: heavy paper, book sleeve, many photos. The book is about the museum: its development, architecture, design, configuration and exhibits.
