This perennial grass, a cultivar of the larger Miscanthus sinensis species, typically reaches heights of 4 to 7 feet (1.2 to 2.1 meters). What sets 'Zebrinus' apart is its unique, horizontally banded leaves with alternating stripes of green and creamy gold, resembling the stripes of a zebra. In late summer to early fall, it produces feathery plumes of flowers that emerge with a pinkish tint before turning silvery-white, creating a captivating contrast with the foliage. Zebra grass is known for its resilience, drought tolerance, and adaptability to a variety of soil types, making it a favored choice in landscaping. It lends a dramatic and elegant touch to gardens, whether planted as a specimen, in borders, or alongside water features, offering year-round visual interest and a touch of the exotic to outdoor spaces. Germination
Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' First remove seeds from stems over your soil incase seeds fall. To successfully germinate Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' seeds, next by soaking the seeds in water for 2 hours to enhance moisture absorption. After soaking, prepare a seed tray with a well-draining, sterile seed-starting mix. Sow the seeds on the surface, pressing them lightly into the soil without covering them completely, as they require light for germination. Maintain the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, ideally using a spray bottle to prevent disturbance. Place the seed tray in a warm environment with temperatures between 70-75°F (21-24°C) and ensure it receives indirect sunlight or use a grow light. Germination can take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks. Once the seedlings have developed a couple of true leaves and are strong enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden, ensuring they are in a location with full sun and well-draining soil.
