Philodendron camposportoanum is a fast growing climbing aroid prized for its dramatic leaf transformation and velvety texture. Juvenile leaves emerge small and heart shaped with bronze tones, then mature into elongated, multi lobed foliage with a deep green sheen and subtle metallic flush. Native to Brazil, this species is highly sought after for its ability to completely change form as it climbs, making it a dynamic statement plant for collectors who appreciate foliage evolution. Given support to climb, it produces larger, more dramatically shaped leaves, while in a hanging pot it will trail with smaller, softer growth. A rewarding plant that adds depth, texture and movement to any indoor jungle.
Position & Light
Prefers bright indirect light. Tolerates medium light but leaf size and colour depth improve with stronger filtered light. Avoid harsh direct sun which can scorch foliage. Ideal near an east facing window or a few metres back from a north facing window in New Zealand homes.
Watering
Allow the top third of the potting mix to dry before watering. Keep evenly moist during active growth but never waterlogged. Reduce frequency in winter when growth slows. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Humidity
Enjoys moderate to high humidity. Will adapt to average indoor levels but produces larger, more luxurious foliage in higher humidity environments. Ideal for bathrooms or grouped with other plants.
Soil
Use a chunky, well draining aroid mix containing bark, perlite and quality potting media. Airflow around the roots is essential for strong growth.
Feeding
Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Pause feeding through winter.
Growth Habit & Support
A natural climber that benefits from a moss pole or totem. Climbing encourages larger, more mature leaf forms. Can also be grown trailing if preferred, though leaves will remain smaller.
Difficulty
Moderate. Best suited to plant lovers comfortable managing light, watering balance and providing climbing support.
Pet Safety
Toxic if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that may cause irritation to pets and humans.
